Musical Director

Picture
Musical Director Steve Winter hails from Canterbury in Kent. He first picked up a brass instrument at the age of 12 having previously tried his hand at playing the organ (with very limited success) and having resisted efforts to get him to play the Clarinet. He started off playing Baritone with the Salvation Army and soon started playing Eb Bass and Euphonium as well; he also borrowed an unused Trombone from the band room and taught himself the basics in the privacy of his bedroom.

After training as a teacher at the Southampton University, Steve was appointed as a music teacher at the Littlehampton Community School in West Sussex. There, he has lead the Orchestra and the Jazz Band, has lead a beginners Steel Band, and has been Musical Director for a number of joint productions with the Drama Department, the highlight of which was the musical "We Will Rock You" at Christmas 2010.

Steve joined the Littlehampton Concert Band and played there for several years before getting involved once again with brass bands after a friend was appointed as Musical Director of the Worthing Silver Band. He also played with the Worthing Philharmonic Orchestra, and it was through a fellow Trombone player there that he heard about the Musical Director vacancy at Mid Sussex Brass Band. He applied, and was told that the band was not looking for any more applicants. However, a late change of heart meant that Steve was a last-minute addition to the audition process and the rest, as they say, is history.
